Author: Hearn, Lafcadio.
Publisher: Sydney: The Quandong Press.
Format: Softcover duodecimo, staple bound, natural card wrappers with blue text, numbered “45” of 250 copies and publisher’s “L.D.G.” initials in ink at rear, “John D. Nield” ex-libris plate on inside cover, 15pp, two tipped-in plates: linocut frontispiece portrait of the author, and one process screen plate facing p.9 signed “V. Cowdroy” in pencil below image, 15pp, 20 x 12cm.
This is the only imprint known from The Quandong Press, started by Leonard D. Gilmour of Gilmour’s Bookshop. The signed plate facing page 9 is by Victoria Ethel Cowdroy (Australian, 1908–1994), who usually signed her art with the pseudonym “Royston.” She was a student of Rayner Hoff, and was clearly inspired by the illustration of Norman Lindsay.
Chips, tears, creases and light soiling to wrappers, previous owner’s name and date “36” in ink on half-title, foxing throughout, rusty staples.
