Les Illuminations [Poems by Rimbaud], 1949.

Arthur Rimbaud, lithograph with pochoir for Les Illuminations, 1949, by Fernand Leger.

Arthur Rimbaud (French, 1854–1891) was a poet of huge influence on 20th century artists and surrealists. His reputation as the original enfant terrible of Western literature has much to do with the fact that his poetry was all written by the time he had turned 20. Fernand Leger’s (French, 1881–1955) bold strokes of colour and wordy illustrations throughout this volume bring to life the spirit of movement Rimbaud carried through his writing and short life.

Group of Melbourne Fashion Show Invitations, 1919–1928.

Group of twelve Melbourne Fashion Show invitations, showing wonderful Art Nouveau and Art Deco fashion illustrations, 1919–1928.

A rare survival of Melbourne’s early 20th-century fashion culture: Twelve illustrated invitations issued by “Paris End adjacent” Flinders Lane softgoods houses, capturing the shift from Art Nouveau to Art Deco in Australian fashion. Printed in letterpress with colour illustrations, these ephemeral items were sent to Melbourne’s society women for seasonal fashion previews.

A remarkable survival of women’s social and design history, seldom found as a cohesive group. They offer not only strong visual appeal but also rich research potential in the fields of fashion history, women’s culture, Australian retail, and graphic design.
