Waiting for Godot, Samuel Beckett’s (Irish, 1906–1989) classic absurdist tragicomedy premiered in English at the Arts Theatre London, a private members’ club, before being transferred to the public Criterion Theatre where it received a much wider reception and was governed by licensing authorities. The lord chamberlain office took offense to the play and was successful in getting it censored. This programme comes from a defining moment of 20th century theatre.
