Text includes “Dear sir, May I tell you what pleasure your letter remonstrating with the criticism of the exhibition of ‘Contemporary British Painting’, at present on view here, has given me? The aim of the exhibition in question is that it should be a sort of epitome of serious British painting and drawing today. It occurs to me that you might care to glance at the catalogue of the show to which you have lent a large measure of additional interest. Believe me, Yours very truly, John Rothenstein, Director.”

John Rothenstein (English, 1901–1992) was director of the Graves Art Gallery from its inception in 1933 until 1938, when he became the director of the Tate Gallery. Nicolas Bentley (English, 1907–1978), illustrator.

Tears to edges, crinkles overall.
