Format: Pair of chromolithograph and letterpress trade cards, annotated “Mrs Cornell” in pencil verso, 6.5 x 11cm.

Text reads “R. Newey, opposite Custom House, Launceston. A prosperous new year [or] Compliments of the season.”

In Maning’s Tasmanian Directory for 1881–1882 R. Newey is listed as “Newey, Richard, hay and corn dealer, 131 George St, Launceston.” Page 172 shows an advert for Newey: “Hay and corn dealer. Grass, clover, agricultural, vegetable, flower and garden seeds of all descriptions in their seasons.”

Provenance: Marjorie Graham collection, with the notes “Mrs Cornell is reasonably assumed to be the wife of Robert E. Cornell, Tower Hill Street, Deloraine, Tasmania in 1881” and “Cards from an old album formerly in possession of Cornell family.”

Graham also notes one card was on loan to Elizabeth Bay House, December 1979, for Christmas in the Colony – an exhibition held at Elizabeth Bay House from January 1 to 28, 1980, as part of the Festival of Sydney. Ref: The Australian Women’s Weekly, 26.12.1979.
