Format: Double-sided chromolithograph and letterpress trade card annotated in ink, 10.6 x 7.5cm.
Text includes “Wertheim’s sewing machine factory, Frankfort/M. 3 [or 5? annotated from 2/6]/ per week. Frank Hart, agent. Brisbane & St John Streets, Launceston.” Depicts gnomes working a sewing machine. Verso shows postage stamps and a boy holding an envelope addressed to Hugo Wertheim.
Frank Hart was an importer of general ironmongery as stated in Maning’s Tasmanian Directory for 1881–1882, and the “sole agent” for Wertheim, with business premises at 58 Brisbane Street, Launceston.
Provenance: Marjorie Graham collection, with the note “this card would have been given to a member of the Cornell family of Tower Hill Street, Deloraine…it was pasted in the scrap album of Mary(?) Cornell c1877/79.”
