Text reads “For God’s sake don’t post it –– sit + read the other two & then I’ll forward you signatures to paste in the cover. I cannot pack & send parcels. Too much to attend to. April 3rd.”

Sir Alfred Munnings (English, 1878–1959) was foremost an equine painter who became president of the Royal Academy in 1944. He was a vocal critic of modernism and has become a figurehead of everything that was reactionary and old-fashioned. In 1949 “he gave a tipsy, ill-tempered speech at a Royal Academy banquet in which he dismissed modern art as ‘damned nonsense.’” Ref: The Critic, 22.4.2022.
